CBCT Scan

At our Donnybrook clinic, we are committed to providing the latest in dental imaging technology to ensure precise diagnoses and effective treatment planning. Our state-of-the-art Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scans offer detailed 3D images of your dental structures, including teeth, bones, soft tissues, and nerve pathways. This advanced imaging technique surpasses traditional two-dimensional X-rays by delivering comprehensive views that are crucial for accurate assessments.

What is a CBCT Scan?

A CBCT scan is a specialised form of X-ray technology that generates 3D images of the dental and facial region. Unlike conventional X-rays, which provide flat images, CBCT offers a complete view of the jaw's anatomy, allowing for precise evaluation of bone structure, tooth orientation, and nerve locations. The scanning process is quick, non-invasive, and entirely pain-free, typically completed within 15 minutes

Applications of CBCT Scans

CBCT scans are invaluable in various dental procedures, including:

  • Dental Implant: Accurate assessment of bone density and structure to determine the optimal placement of implants.

  • Orthodontics: Detailed analysis of tooth alignment and jaw relationships to devise effective orthodontic treatments.

  • Assessment of Impacted Teeth: Precise localisation of impacted teeth, aiding in surgical planning.

  • Diagnosis of TMJ Disorders: Comprehensive views of the temporomandibular joint to identify abnormalities.

  • Evaluation of Jaw Pathologies: Detection and assessment of cysts, tumours, or other lesions within the jawbone.

Safety and Radiation Concerns

Patient safety is our utmost priority. Our CBCT technology utilises a significantly lower radiation dose compared to traditional medical CT scans. According to the NHS, a regular CT scan delivers a radiation dose equivalent to approximately 63 to 154 days of natural background radiation, whereas a dental CBCT scan corresponds to about 6 to 30 days of background radiation, posing minimal health risks. We ensure that every scan is justified and performed with the lowest possible exposure to achieve the necessary diagnostic information.

What to Expect During Your CBCT Scan

The CBCT scanning procedure is straightforward and comfortable:

  1. Preparation: You may be asked to remove any metal objects, such as jewellery or glasses, to prevent interference with the imaging.

  2. Positioning: You will need to stand for the scan, and our technician will position your head to ensure optimal imaging.

  3. Scanning: The CBCT machine will rotate around your head, capturing multiple images from different angles. It's important to remain still during this brief process to ensure clear images. Process takes as little as 15minutes.

  4. Completion: Once the scan is complete, you can resume your normal activities immediately, as there are no side effects.
