What Is an Essix Retainer?
An Essix retainer is a thin, transparent plastic retainer that fits snugly over your teeth, similar in appearance to Invisalign or Angel aligners. It is created using precise dental impressions or digital scans to ensure a comfortable and accurate fit.

Essix retainers are most commonly worn:
-
After braces
-
After Invisalign or clear aligner treatment
-
To prevent teeth from shifting over time
-
As a replacement for lost or damaged retainers
Because they are clear and lightweight, Essix retainers are a popular choice for adults and teens who want a discreet solution.

Benefits of an Essix Retainer
Choosing an Essix retainer offers several advantages:
-
Discreet Appearance
The clear material makes the retainer almost invisible when worn, ideal for social and professional settings.
-
Comfortable Fit
Custom-made to your teeth, Essix retainers are smooth and easy to wear, even overnight.
-
Effective Teeth Retention
They hold your teeth firmly in place, helping to prevent unwanted movement after orthodontic treatment.
-
Easy to Remove
Essix retainers can be removed for eating, drinking, and cleaning, making them very practical for daily life.
-
Quick Replacement
If your retainer is lost or damaged, a replacement can often be made quickly using digital records.
Essix Retainer vs Other Types of Retainers
An Essix retainer is a clear, removable orthodontic retainer that is nearly invisible when worn. It offers a very high level of comfort and is easy to remove for eating, drinking, and cleaning, making it a popular choice after braces or Invisalign treatment.

A Hawley retainer is also removable but includes a visible metal wire across the front teeth and an acrylic base. While effective, it is more noticeable and generally less comfortable than an Essix retainer.

A fixed retainer is permanently bonded to the back of the teeth and cannot be removed. It is invisible from the front and highly effective at preventing tooth movement, but it requires extra care when brushing and flossing.

Our dentists will always recommend the most suitable retainer based on your teeth, treatment history, and lifestyle.

How Long Should You Wear an Essix Retainer?
Retainer wear varies from patient to patient, but a common guideline is:

-
First 3–6 months: Wear full-time (except eating and cleaning)
-
After that: Night-time wear only, as advised by your dentist
Consistent wear is crucial. Teeth naturally want to move back to their original positions, and wearing your Essix retainer as directed helps prevent relapse.
If you’ve completed orthodontic treatment with us, your retainer plan will be discussed as part of your aftercare. Learn more about clear aligner treatment on our Invisalign page.
Caring for Your Essix Retainer
Proper care will extend the life of your retainer and keep it hygienic:

-
Rinse with lukewarm water after removal
-
Clean daily using a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste)
-
Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic
-
Store in a protective case when not in use
-
Bring your retainer to dental check-ups for inspection
Regular dental visits also help ensure your teeth remain healthy while wearing retainers. You can book routine appointments via our contact page.
How Long Does an Essix Retainer Last?
With good care, an Essix retainer typically lasts 1–3 years. Over time, natural wear, teeth grinding, or accidental damage may require replacement.

If your retainer feels loose, cracked, or uncomfortable, it’s important to replace it promptly to prevent tooth movement.
Essix Retainer Cost
The cost of an Essix retainer depends on factors such as:

-
Whether it’s part of orthodontic treatment
-
Single or dual retainers (upper and lower)
-
Replacement vs first retainer
At The Dental Suite, we provide transparent pricing and patients can get an Essix retainer starting from €150
